Photo and Marketing Guide
This chapter explains how to prepare plants, create clean displays, take consistent photographs and present products for sale.
Prepare the plant first
Before taking a photograph, remove dry leaves, weeds, empty containers and visible rubbish. Wipe or wash the pot, arrange the stems naturally and make sure the plant is well watered but not dripping. The photograph should represent the plant honestly.
Use a consistent photo style
Photograph plants in soft natural light, preferably in the morning or late afternoon. Avoid harsh midday shadows and distracting backgrounds. Hold the camera level, keep the main plant in focus and take more than one view.
Useful photographs include:
- a full view showing the plant and container;
- a closer view of the flowers or leaves;
- a side view showing the growth habit; and
- a group display showing how the plant can be used.
Use clear filenames such as burgundy-coleus.jpg instead of camera-generated names. Photographs used for identification should also show diagnostic features such as flowers, stems, leaf arrangement and the whole plant.
Present plants in groups
Group similar plants or complementary colours together, while keeping the entrance and walking space open. Repetition of matching pots can make even a small display look organised. Plants that are damaged, recently potted or not ready for sale should remain outside the main display.
Create a simple sales message
Each advertised plant should include its common name, price, approximate size, light requirement, location and whether the pot is included. Avoid promising that a plant will perform in every setting.
A basic sales post can follow this pattern:
Plant name: Burgundy coleus
Best for: Bright shade, verandas and mixed foliage displays
Price: TZS [amount]
Collection or delivery: [details]
To order: [contact method]
Choose manageable channels
Start with channels that can be maintained consistently, such as WhatsApp Status, WhatsApp groups, referrals and direct contact with nearby institutions or businesses. Record which enquiries lead to actual sales before investing heavily in advertising.
